Lean 101 (CG001)


Description
This course will help you learn about Lean principles and concepts that may be applied in your workplace. Using these principles and concepts to improve both your daily tasks and those of your coworkers will make your job easier. You will learn the language of Lean, which will help you participate in Lean initiatives within your organization.

The course consists of the following modules:

1. Introduction to Lean
- What is Lean
- Why Apply Lean
- Why We Need Lean in the Municipal Sector

2. Lean Principles
- The Five Principles of Lean (Value, Value Stream, Flow, Pull & Perfection

3. The Concept of Value and Waste
- Understanding value
- Activity types
- Municipalities and waste
- Lean classifications of Wastes (TIM WOODS)

4. Lean Problem Solving
- PDCA Problem Solving Approach
- Just Do It (JDI) Improvements
- How to complete a JDI improvement

On completion of this course, you will be able to:

• describe basic Lean terms, principles, and concepts;
• differentiate between value-added and non value-added activities;
• recognize the eight wastes; and
• complete a Just-Do-It (JDI) improvement project within your work area.

Estimated effort: 2 hours (broken into 4 segments of about 30 mins each)

Course Materials: included in your course are templates that can be downloaded and used anytime.

Test your knowledge: Each module will conclude with a knowledge check quiz. This will give you an opportunity to practice and review key concepts taught. The quizzes will comprise of multiple-choice based questions with feedback provided to reinforce learning and let you know where you need to improve.
